Perhaps the most disappointing aspect of Mega Man 11 is the soundtrack. Sound design is unfortunately another story. The game plays at a buttery smooth 60 frames-per-second, so there’s no worry about a sudden shift in speed when timing difficult jumps (That’s what the Speed Gear is for anyway). Enemies are distinct from one another and each have a specific way of challenging the player.

The bubbly, light-hearted enemy design is as charming as ever, and the animation is fluid and full of energy. The graphics are bright and colorful and stay true to the series. Mega Man 11 also streamlines Rush Coil and Rush Jet by giving them their own dedicated buttons, so there’s no need to “switch” over to them when needed. Knowing how and when to use it adds a new layer of strategy to the well-known Mega Man gameplay. The Double Gear system is a welcome addition to the Mega Man formula. I think it’s going to be that fundamental to Mega Man from now on. I can safely predict Capcom will use this system in Mega Man 12, or even Mega Man X9 (fingers crossed). Forcing you to use it strategically throughout the entire game adds a whole new, and much needed layer to the Mega Man formula. They were able to implement its use within the overall design of the game.

This new system marks the first fundamental evolution in the series since the charge-shot (or X upgrades, if you want to look at the entire Mega Man canon). Even bosses have their own Double Gear system, so you’ll need to use yours wisely to beat them. The are certain sections that are nearly impossible to pass without the Speed Gear. You will be switching them on and off a lot throughout the game, especially Speed. Speed slows everything down while Power will enhance your weaponry in a similar way the enhanced X-Buster works in Mega Man X. You can toggle either power or speed (or both). The Double Gear system is the new feature in Mega Man 11. Light integrates Double Gears into Mega Man and you’re off to blast everything to pieces. Wily grows embittered, fast forward to the present and Wily unleashes havoc on the world, yada yada yada. The board decides to fund Light’s research. Light’s research was on AI while Wily’s was on the “Double Gear” system, which essentially overclocks robots. Wily (back when they were still students) are trying to get their research funded. The story revolves around the new Double Gear system. Will a new team and a fresh perspective breath new life into our favorite video game robot? Or is he a legacy product that should be decommissioned? This time without series creator Kenji Inafune at the helm. Mega Man 11 marks the second comeback for the Blue Bomber, looking to be better than ever. With the cancellation of both Mega Man Legends 3 and Mega Man Universe, the future looked pretty bleak. Mega Man is finally back! There have been plenty of imitators/homages like Mighty Gunvolt, Azure Striker Gunvolt, the dismal Mighty No.
